openSUSE 11.0 Alpha 1

Saturday, January 19th, 2008 | SuSE Linux, Techie | No Comments

So I decided it was time to install openSUSE 11.0 Alpha 1. First impressions:

What I used:
Hardware: VMWare Workstation 6.0.2
Installation Type: Default

Installation:
The new QT4 based look is just OUTSTANDING. I can’t wait until it’s polished off. I hope 11.0 will come as a live CD / DVD for installation. One package failed (I forgot to write down what package for bug reporting). I am glad to see KDE is the Default DE, I think this will give an edge over Ubuntu (sure there is Kubuntu but Kubuntu is not quite like Ubuntu).

KDE 4.0:
I have a development 10.3 box with KDE 4.0.0 so it isn’t something that is “Crazy New” to me. However I sure hope by the release of openSUSE 11.0 that KDE 4.1 will be out and the Plasma panel will be configurable. Won’t touch on this too much since there is plenty of great up’s and down’s and it shouldn’t be what openSUSE 11.0 revolves around.

More to come….
